Back to grasses...

To explain what is happening with native grasses along the creek.

Native grasses are generally perennial, and don't need much water or maintenance, apart from grazing (which we generally substitute with mowing). They mostly fit into those that grow in Winter, and those that grow in Summer.

They compete with other seasonal annuals (aka weeds) like Barley Grass and Wild Oats which we try to mow before their seed is viable to reduce future competition.

At the moment we are trying an experiment on a couple of areas which have been 'bare earthed' by burning some collected branches, also destroying the seeds from the weeds.

We have raked the burn areas and spread seed for Wallaby Grass (Austrodanthonia/Danthonia) and Brush wire-grass (Aristida behriana) into those areas and watered them in. We hope it works - time will tell.

  1. I would love to know how successful your project is. I would like to do something similar at my place in Hartley SA.
