Revegetation Activities

One of our earliest plantings.

The area was basically just covered in weeds, so the Council contractor sprayed it, and then 'ripped and rolled' it to encourage root growth immediately before planting.

Lead by Sam Everingham, the DEWNR Community Ranger, in September 2014 we worked with students from the Farrell Flat and Burra Community Schools and planted over 200 seedlings - a mix of Melaleucas and Acacias, and along the edge of the Creek, some River Red Gums.

The plants have done well, as can be seen from the photos, but we did learn lessons about some weeds and maintenance.

Firstly, spraying does not necessarily reduce the number of seeds, and rip lines happily host them. Secondly, ripping needs to be associated with a smoothing technique, as it is very rough to mow.

This photo was taken recently - the Red Gums are 2 to 3 metres and more tall, the smaller plants are growing above their guards. The guards help us find them when mowing, and also protect them from the herbicide spray. We will remove them when we are confident we can locate the plants amongst the weeds!
