A Community Nursery in Burra

The idea of propagating our own plants came quite early in our plans. The general feeling was that we had enough to do with simply planting the seedlings provided by the Regional Council of Goyder, and then undertaking the ongoing maintenance of those plantings.

The difficulty with that was that we quickly realised that not all of the species we wanted to plant (as listed in the EBS Plan) were on the 'readily available' Trees for Life list, and further shopping showed that some were scarce, and all were going to cost money.

Once more we had supporters - the Murray Darling Basin NRM encouraged us to apply for a grant for materials to be used in propagation. The Regional Council of Goyder also encouraged us to think about it.

Clean up begins  - May 2015
The options as we saw it were to either get people in the community to propagate for us, or for us to create a facility which would be able to accommodate a Community Nursery.

A team of us visited the Murray Bridge Community Nursery to see what they saw as essential, and we came back and   considered a few different sites around Burra.

Old Cricket nets - July 2015 - its cold!
The one we finally settled on was at the Burra Golf Club, which had, as part of its agreement with Council and old football and cricket oval adjacent to the course and the work sheds.

We looked at the old cricket nets and decided they could be converted into a shade house, and that this meant that we had the old clubrooms for training and meetings, toilets etc.

We applied for a grant from the Council, in which we described what we would do, what it would cost and what trade help we needed.

So it all came together!

One of the unexpected bonuses was that in the building and site work we discovered even more species of native plants we could encourage to spread along the creek.
